Drake’s show-stopping verse on Jack Harlow’s “Churchill Downs” took the lyricist less than 15 minutes to write, Lil Yachty revealed in a new interview.
Lil Boat caught up with Akademiks and the pair discussed a variety of topics, including Drizzy’s lauded appearance on Harlow’s new LP Come Home the Kids Miss You. As Yachty explains, Drake told him in a recent conversation that he penned his recent verse rather quickly while he was out in the Turks and Caicos Islands with the Louisville rapper.
“I actually talked to Drake about that verse,” Yachty said in the new episode of Off the Record, as excerpted above. “He said he did that shit in like 11 minutes. He said he did that in front of Jack. That verse, he told me that. … They did it when they were out there in the islands. He did it right in front of him. ”
The conversation reached beyond Drake, too. Elsewhere in the podcast, Yachty discussed his Quality Control label mates Migos when pressed on rumors of the trio’s breakup, which surfaced when Quavo and Takeoff announced their Offset-less new single as Unc & Phew, “Hotel Lobby.” Whispers have percolated in recent weeks, also because fans noticed Quavo and Offset were no longer following each other on Instagram.
“I don’t know. … I haven’t seen them n **** s in a long time, ”Yachty said of the breakup rumors.
Boat also spoke generally about why blogs and fans tend to hear about internal issues and splits in music relatively “late” in comparison to when they happen.
“It’s late to the public,” he said. “I’m not talking about that [Migos] situation, I’m talking about in general. Usually when shit hits the fan, it’s usually late. Any kind of speculation or anything going on, usually it’s some shit that’s been going on. In rap or in music, if something happens, it’s usually speculating. You hear something about it before it comes out. So I don’t think much of anything with the blogs, but I don’t know. ”
As for other members of the QC crew, Yachty expressed no interest in a label-based tour. As he explained, he and Lil Baby are so different that he doesn’t think a tour would work.
“I’m not going in front of Lil Baby, bro,” Yachty said. “Motherfuckers gonna look at me crazy, ‘What the fuck n *** a, get off that stage.’ I’m not going in front of that n *** a at all… We are in such different lanes, if someone’s coming to see him, they are not tryna hear me. We are on two different ends of the spectrum. ”
